“The temporality of words expresses an almost poetic game of death and rebirth: the successive metaphorizations make the idea grow and convert it into something more than itself, in a ‘form of thought’, since the language thinks, thinks us and thinks for us as much, at least, as we think through it.”
Jean Baudrillard
The second intervention of Proyecto Fachada has been commissioned to Teresa Serrano (Mexico City, 1936). Her work is charged of metaphoric associations that refer to themes related to memory, identity, violence and the relationship between nature and culture. One of her last productions has focused on the symbolic realm of words, using the fire simulacrum (through wax and candles) to question the permanence of certain ethic notions associated to the western culture.
SIEMPRE/NUNCA (always/never) are absolute, timeless, determinant and inseparable concepts. Both words operate on a complicity of opposites, were the meaning both of “always” and “never· is elusive and absent the moment the value and faux premises that they generate are questioned. By crystallizing these words on wax, in the form of candles, and by the symbolic action of burning them, Teresa Serrano “cleans” everyday language of inert and senselessness words.
